As the nine members of our group get ready for our trip at the end of July 2011, let’s not forget what we are doing this for (other than the fun of doing something drastically different and out of our comfort zone). We are raising funds to help Mission Himalaya build a permanent home for 45+ orphaned and poor children in Nepal – who are at the moment housed in not very nice places and moving pillar to post in rented accommodation.
Our support is for Phase 1 of their project: to build an orphanage on the outskirts of Kathmandu in Sharada Village, near Kavre,. The place is close to local schools and villages where these orphans will receive a high level of care, have food and water, clothes, shelter, access to medical treatment and care, be nurtured, trained in the benefits of sustainable energy and eco gardens and prepare them for being integrated into the local community.
So far, Mission Himalaya and its associates have completed purchase of land, constructed the access road (still needs a little more work) and finished the boundary wall as well as the two storey concrete frame of the main building.
Challenges ahead
Construction and funding is behind schedule and the cost of supporting the orphans in temporary accommodation is expensive and problematic. Mission Himalaya desperately need additional funds (close to USD 80,000) either in money, materials or donations for the following:
- Completing all the construction by December 2011 (rainy season is just beginning)
- Provision of water storage and treatment facility
- Grey water treatment plant
- Solar power, solar external lighting.
- Bio gas facility for cooking
- Fit outs such as furniture, kitchen provisions and bedding.
Any assistance or support you or your company can offer would be highly appreciated. Mission Himalaya has achieved so much so far, overcoming many difficult setbacks and now needs financial help to complete this program and provide comfortable housing, education and care for their orphans. Having acquired the land, completed the access road, boundary wall, guard house, foundations and the two storey concrete frame the only restriction to completing the project in 2011 is the lack of funding and of course the imminent monsoons.
